Have you ever tried matcha powder in your breakfast smoothie? Simon’s not the hugest fan of matcha but I really like its strong green tea flavor, and this Sweet Matcha Breakfast Shake is super nutritious and delicious. It’s sweet, creamy and the matcha flavor is really subtle. I love that it has some healthy fats, protein and tons of minerals from the tea and the greens. The perfect breakfast to start your day full of energy!
Matcha has been used for centuries in Japan because of its health benefits. It’s really high in antioxidants and a lot more powerful than regular green tea. Scientists have even found that it will boost your energy levels, increase your fat-burning metabolism and detoxify your body. That’s a lot of promises, right?
Sweet Matcha Breakfast Shake
SERVES: 1 person (2 cups = 1 large glass)
EQUIPMENT: blender
INGREDIENTS:
1 large cup non-dairy milk, unsweetened (I used coconut rice milk)
1 large ripe banana
¼ avocado (or extra banana)
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 teaspoon chia seeds
½ to 1 teaspoon matcha powder
1 large handful of greens (spinach, chard, kale…)
DIRECTIONS:
Pour the milk into the blender and add the banana, avocado, lime juice, chia seeds, matcha powder and greens. Blend until smooth.
JULIE’S TIPS & TRICKS:
• I added chia seeds to this sweet matcha breakfast shake for extra protein, but you could replace them with hemp seeds or a large spoonful of your favorite protein powder as well.
• If you’re not a fan of banana, replace it with mango, pineapple, persimmon…
Now I would love to hear from you! What do you like to add to your smoothies for extra energy and nutrition? I’m a big fan of matcha, spirulina and maca! I’d love to hear what gives you that extra boost in the morning, so definitely leave a comment down below.
I've looked at the nutrition content of chia seed and flax seed, the latter seems higher and cheaper, (in the UK). Love the recipes, thank you. Neil.
